Flashcards.
Running.
These are two things that define my life right now. They aren’t the only two things, but I have found they work in tandem with each other. 3 years ago I started running. 3 years ago I started to discover just how deeply dyslexia was about to effect my life and the lives of my children. Sometimes its the running that keeps me grounded while I’m dealing with the flashcards….and there are times when I rely on the concrete aspect of flashcards to get me through a rough spot in my running.
I am the mother of 4 children. 3 boys, 1 girl. My older 2 boys have both been diagnosed with dyslexia. #1 is a 6th grader at a local charter school. #2 is a 4th grader at our dining room table and I’m his teacher. #3 is a kindergartener who has shown many warning signs of dyslexia. #4 is a preschooler and up to this point she has shown NO warning signs. Since I was in college I suspected I had a learning disability and now I know I’m dyslexic (although I have never been formally diagnosed).
Through this blog I am hoping to explore my own thoughts on raising children with dyslexia and connect it to research I come across. I know dyslexia looks different for every child and I don’t intend to define this journey for everyone. I will also insert my thoughts on homeschooling because it is something I never saw coming until it happened. There will also be a tale or two about running. I am hopeful that this blog will give a bigger meaning to my adventures in homeschooling and also my struggles and joy with dyslexia. Share your thoughts. Share your own adventures. Ask questions. Challenge me.
Can’t wait to read more! You are inspiring! XO
